Equine facilitated psychotherapy focuses on the relationship between human and horse as the central healing energy. This way of working honors the role of the horse as teacher and guide to deeper awareness, non-verbal communication, presence and authenticity.
Horses are prey animals and as such they are very tuned in to their environment. This evolutionary trait gives them an uncanny ability to sense our unacknowledged thoughts and feelings, offering us reflections that can allow a deeper experience of self.
As non-verbal communicators, horses give an alternative to thought-based relationship. They invite us into deeper levels of communication and help bring into consciousness the many ways we interact with the world.
Unlike humans, horses experience their emotions as fluid messages, offering them information to create greater awareness and safety. They can invite us into deeper emotional agility and awareness.
This therapy is experiential. Learning through doing and increasing body awareness allows new insights to be integrated into our whole being.
Within this modality, most of the horse activities are done from the ground and do not involve traditional riding.

In today’s industrialized world we often find ourselves living a life that is out of balance, struggling to get through the day rather than living and enjoying the present.
Horses live in the moment. This capacity comes from their ability to fully embody emotions and treat them as welcome information. They travel through cycles of experience and release as one moment flows to the next. This is the true source of their freedom, balance, serenity and wisdom.

2 day horse workshop for women trauma survivors
Location: Anahata Horse Centre in Bancroft, Ontario
Horses are natural teachers of embodiment, boundaries, relationships and fluid emotions. Like us they have had extensive histories of violence and trauma perpetuated largely by humans. Trauma steals our lives from us with stories untold and wounds unhealed. The horses can show us how to reclaim our physical bodies, know where we begin and others end and offer us a model for intimacy in relationship that can transform our lives. As prey animals horses are emotionally sensitive and keenly aware of their environment, these sensitivities make them ideal teachers for humans who often conceal emotional information and struggle with presence and authenticity.
Join us as we journey with the horses into our untapped self – finding body, voice and truth we can heal the impact and reclaim ourselves.

Over many generations we have lost our connection to earth, plants, and animals resulting in a growing imbalance that threatens our lives on this planet. How can we return to connection and alignment? For thousands of years horses have been partners to humans. Now, we are turning to them in an ancient way, recognizing that they can lead us back to ourselves and life. Horses are natural teachers of authenticity and emotional agility. They invite us back into our naturalness in alignment with all beings.
